  18.      _d_i_f_f.  If only 1 file is specified, then the files compared are _f_i_l_e_1 and
  19.      an uncompressed _f_i_l_e_1.gz.  If two files are specified, then they are
  20.      uncompressed if necessary and fed to _c_m_p or _d_i_f_f.  The exit status from
  21.      _c_m_p or _d_i_f_f is preserved.
